So that’s the plan! As a shawarma obsessed fanatic, I’ve spent 22 years looking for the perfect shawarma recipe.

ShawarmaRecipe.com began a couple of years ago – at least spiritually – in a small website that I built on a friends server. Up until early May 2011 it was still active and very busy, being on page one of Google for shawarma recipe, shawarma recipes, best shawarma recipe and pretty much every variation.

The original  shawarma recipe site, called Shawarma Hunt got several hundred visitors a week, but to be honest it was a bit basic, so I wanted to do something much better (it’s been replicated on this site HERE)- a fully interactive shawarma recipe site, where you can add recipes, vote for recipes, review shawarma restaurants, discuss equipment, suppliers, accessories – in fact anything shawarma related.

I wanted to give other shawarma fans like you, EVERYTHING you could possibly need in one place.

Shawarma Recipe dot com is born

As of last night, 13 April 2011, I started this here site – what I hope will become the ultimate shawarma resource on the web.

Shawarma Recipe – the beginnings

My hunt for the perfect shawarma recipe became a bit of a grail quest. A 22 year long culinary adventure, filled with hope and anticipation – followed, usually, by disappointment.

If you’ve tasted a good shawarma – on some crowded middle eastern street corner – you’ll know that the combination of flavours, smells and textures is pretty much food heaven, centre stage.

You’ll also know that on coming home you’ve probably tried to recapture that perfect taste moment – and if you’re lucky enough to live somewhere cosmopolitan that could be in a shawarma café, alongside other western fast foods – but more than likely your options will be to make do with a donner kebab, or try to knock something together yourself using western ingredients.

Either way, it won’t taste like the heavenly shawarma of your memories, and now dreams.

So I set out to find the recipe.

First problem was that middle eastern street vendors and café owners guard their shawarma recipes as if they are state secrets.

Second problem, is that shawarma recipes vary quite considerably across the middle east. A Syrian shawarma will not taste like a Saudi shawarma which again will be quite different to an Israeli shawarma.

So I learnt a bit of Arabic and grabbed my passport….

After 20 years searching the globe, testing the good, the bad and the donner I found not one perfect shawarma recipe, but three!

Right. I better get on and build this website – or maybe I’ll go and knock myself up a quick shawarma first. Breakfast of champions!
